QuadStretch: A Forearm-wearable Skin Stretch Display for Immersive VR Experience

Force feedback is important for immersive VR experience but requires a cumbersome device restricting the use of the hand. An alternative to work around this problem is the use of substituted tactile feedback. QuadStretch is a lightweight and flexible forearm-wearable device for providing substituted skin-stretch feedback to express force on the arm. Consisting of four pairs of tactors, it does not require a ground point and can express the directional sense of force accompanying arm movements. In this demo, we prepared six demo scenarios, Boxing, Archery, Wings, Climbing, Slingshot, and Fishing, to show how the expressive power of QuadStretch can enhance the VR experience.

Exploring Multimodal Watch-back Tactile Display using Wind and Vibration

Watch-back tactile display is a tempting output option to support a smartwatch. However, a single modal tactile display has a limited channel capacity owing to the small contact area and the limited spatial resolution of the skin. To expand the information bandwidth, we considered combining multiple tactile stimuli that are perceptually distinct. As one form of multimodal tactile display, we demonstrate a wind-vibration tactile display. The display consists of two layers of 2 × 2 (4 points) tactile display. By stacking a vibration motor on the top of a fan, each point of the display can present vibration and small wind on the same area on the wrist independently. Based on the relationship of two tactile modalities, we categorized possible interaction scenarios into three pattern types: Individual, Simultaneous, and Sequential. We demonstrate the interaction scenarios to show the feasibility of multimodal tactile display.

Diagnosing and Coping with Mode Errors in Korean-English Dual-language Keyboard

In countries where languages with non-Latin characters are prevalent, people use a keyboard with two language modes namely, the native language and English, and often experience mode errors. To diagnose the mode error problem, we conducted a field study and observed that 78% of the mode errors occurred immediately after application switching. We implemented four methods (Auto-switch, Preview, Smart-toggle, and Preview & Smart-toggle) based on three strategies to deal with the mode error problem and conducted field studies to verify their effectiveness. In the studies considering Korean-English dual input, Auto-switch was ineffective. On the contrary, Preview significantly reduced the mode errors from 75.1% to 41.3%, and Smart-toggle saved typing cost for recovering from mode errors. In Preview & Smart-toggle, Preview reduced mode errors and Smart-toggle handled 86.2% of the mode errors that slipped past Preview. These results suggest that Preview & Smart-toggle is a promising method for preventing mode errors for the Korean-English dual-input environment.

Expanding touch input vocabulary by using consecutive distant taps

In recent years, touch screens have emerged and matured as the main input interface for mobile and tablet computers calling for extended touch input possibilities. In this paper, we explore the use of consecutive distant taps to expand the touch screen input vocabulary. We analyzed time intervals and distances between consecutive taps during common applications on a tablet and verified that consecutive distant taps can be used conflict-free with existing touch gestures. We designed the two interaction techniques Ta-tap and Ta-Ta-tap that utilize consecutive distant taps. Ta-tap uses two consecutive distant taps to invoke alternative touch operations for multi-touch emulation, whereas Ta-Ta-tap uses a series of consecutive distant taps to define a spatial gesture. We verified the feasibility of both interaction techniques through a series of experiments and a user study. The high recognition rate of Ta-tap and Ta-Ta-tap gestures, the few conflicts with existing gestures, and the positive feedback from the participants assert the potential of consecutive distant taps as a new design space to enrich touch screen interactions.

Although reliefs are frequently used to add patterns to product surfaces, there is a lack of interaction techniques to model reliefs on the surface of virtual objects. We adopted the repoussé and chasing artwork techniques in an alternative interaction technique to model relief on virtual surfaces. To support this interaction technique, we developed the double-sided touchpad Trampoline that can detect the position and force of a finger touch on both sides. Additionally, Trampoline provides users with elastic feedback, as its surface consists of a stretchable fabric. We implemented a relief application with this device and the developed interaction technique. An informal user study showed that the proposed system can be a promising solution to create reliefs.

LongPad

In this paper, we explore the possibility of a long touchpad that utilizes the entire area below the keyboard of a laptop computer. An essential prerequisite for such a touchpad is a robust palm rejection method, which we satisfy using a proximity-sensing touchpad. We developed LongPad, a proximity-sensing optical touchpad that is as wide as a laptop keyboard, and implemented a palm rejection algorithm that utilizes proximity images from LongPad. In a user study conducted, we observed that LongPad rejected palm touches almost perfectly while participants were repeating typing and pointing tasks. We also summarize the new design space enabled by LongPad and demonstrate a few of the interaction techniques it facilitates.

In this paper, we introduce K-Menu, a keyword-based dynamic menu interface. When a user enters a keyword, a menu with items related to the keyword is constructed dynamically and presented to the user. We implemented K-Menu as a top-level interface for major mobile applications and mobile web services on a smartphone environment. A subsequent user test confirmed the task efficiency and the user acceptance of K-menu.

We present Touch180, a computer vision based solution for identifying fingers on a mobile touchscreen with a fisheye camera and deep learning algorithm. As a proof-of-concept research, this paper focused on robustness and high accuracy of finger identification. We generated a new dataset for Touch180 configuration, which is named as Fisheye180. We trained a CNN (Convolutional Neural Network)-based network utilizing touch locations as auxiliary inputs. With our novel dataset and deep learning algorithm, finger identification result shows 98.56% accuracy with VGG16 model. Our study will serve as a step stone for finger identification on a mobile touchscreen.

Effect of Tactile Feedback for Button GUI on Mobile Touch Devices

This paper describes new tactile feedback patterns and the effect of their input performance for a button GUI activated by a tap gesture on mobile touch devices. Based on an analysis of touch interaction and informal user tests, several tactile feedback patterns were designed. Using these patterns, three user experiments were performed to investigate appropriate tactile feedback patterns and their input performance during interaction with a touch button. The results showed that a tactile pattern responding to each touch and release gesture with a rapid response time and short falling time provides the feeling of physically clicking a button. The suggested tactile feedback pattern has a significantly positive effect on the number of typing errors and typing task completion time compared to the performance when no feedback is provided.
