In view of presenting the development of an information system (IS) associated with a real world case and an economic sector, namely tourism, the present article is the result of the methodological development of the scientific research study known as IMPACTUR - Tourism Activity Monitoring and Forecasting Indicators. The system that is the object of the current article is directed at tourism as an emerging sector of the economy geared towards excellence in some regions, thus requiring proper tools that allow decision-makers to acquire all possible slight advantages that are so essential to being the best. The IS formulated for IMPACTUR is one of these tools, innovative in Portugal and abroad, providing statistical information online related to tourism. It should be pointed out that it stores updated and timely information that is processed and made available in an electronic format via a website to all tourism professionals and researchers.
Yachting appears as a tourism segment with proven and specific importance for the economic and social development of tourist destinations Every year, thousands of yachts cross the Portuguese waters. Figueira da Foz is a seaside city and a destination with a history connected to tourism activities. Despite having a marina located in the city centre, the number of yachts stopping by is still far from this nautical port maximum capacity. As a reaction, and to change this reality, both local and regional stakeholders have participated in a Delphi panel to find out if yacht tourism has the potential to increase. It has been found that both the destination and its marina have the resources to attract and make this territory a nautical reference, and a strategy has been created. This model may serve as a basis for application in other nautical ports.
This work is about an island (Culatra) placed in the south of Portugal, in the "heart" of Ria Formosa, a Natural Park since 1987. The island constitutes a public place for sustainable production of recreation benefits based on sun & beach. The hypothetical benefit user value estimated with "open-ended format", promotes an understanding and powerful argument for regional decision making. In this evaluation process one has to take into account the free-riding behaviour of some individuals. This behaviour introduces a distortion in the evaluation of the individuals real willingness to pay for and is one of the main causes of inaccuracy in the results obtained with this type of analysis. In this paper we estimate the probability of an individual to have a free-riding behaviour as a function of several individual characteristics and we reevaluate the individuals real capability to pay for based on their fitted probabilities of having a free-riding behaviour.
Abstract The practice of sports by resident communities is a tool for healthy lifestyles, inclusive growth and the promotion of sustainable cities. Nevertheless, the relationship between sport, tourism and recreation still remain an under researched theme. Focusing on the economic pillar of sustainability, this study intends to quantify and analyse the economic costs incurred by families in formal and informal sport practices, as well as the contribution of these activities and related events to the territory’s image projection and attractiveness, by overlapping resident’s and visitor’s perception of sports in the destination. Applied to the municipality of Guimarães (Portugal), this analysis of the sports consumer’s behaviour contributes to filling the gap of knowledge resulting from the studies that, as a rule, exclusively evaluate the investments (supply) and/or the expenses (demand) of events and not the regular practice of sport. A total of 179 questionnaires were applied to residents throughout 2017, through the self-administrate questionnaire method . Findings reveal that residents see sports as one of the factors contributing to the identity of the municipality, underlying motivations for participation as the search for happiness, health, wellbeing, and fun. Expenditures generate multiplier effects in the local economy, allowing to compare growth scenarios. This analysis is a scientific instrument to support territorial innovation and the decision at the local level of public policies for sustainable development, in agreement with objective eight of sustainability defined by the United Nations.
EnglishKnowing the profile of the different target markets is vital in pursuing a model of sustainable development for territories, as well as to increase competition between them while recognizing that they compete to attract and retain residents, business and visitors, among other target markets. Exploring an ongoing research, this paper aims to focus on the profile and motivations of the visitors of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, a protected area in the south of Portugal, which may contribute as a starting point to the knowledge and to the development of future place marketing planning in this territory
