Geodetic corrections to Amazon River water level gauges using ICESat altimetry

Gauge stations are vital for monitoring water levels worldwide. However, many remote basins suffer from having gauges that are not tied to a common datum, making it impossible to know absolute water elevations, and therefore slope. This problem is known to exist on the River Amazon, for example, where water flux modeling efforts have been hampered by inconsistently leveled gauge data that serve as boundary conditions for these models. This paper presents a methodology for using Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry observations to geodetically level gauge stations. A proof‐of‐concept study was carried out to ascertain the feasibility and accuracy of the approach, and a mean absolute error of 19 cm was found. Once this was established, gauges within the Amazon Basin were geodetically leveled. This produced offsets for six gauges using a method that can be transferred to other locations and allows slope and discharge estimates to be calculated. The results are significant, with offsets as large as 13.37 m being added. The approach could provide improvements in modeling floodplain flow, processes, and fluxes in the Amazon Basin and worldwide.

Evaluating a new LISFLOOD‐FP formulation with data from the summer 2007 floods in Tewkesbury, UK

Abstract Two‐dimensional flood inundation modelling is a widely used tool to aid flood risk management. In urban areas, the model spatial resolution required to represent flows through a typical street network often results in an impractical computational cost at the city scale. This paper presents the calibration and evaluation of a recently developed formulation of the LISFLOOD‐FP model, which is more computationally efficient at these resolutions. Aerial photography was available for model evaluation on 3 days from the 24 to the 31 of July. The new formulation was benchmarked against the original version of the model at 20 and 40 m resolutions, demonstrating equally accurate simulation, given the evaluation data but at a 67 times faster computation time. The July event was then simulated at the 2 m resolution of the available airborne LiDAR DEM. This resulted in more accurate simulation of the floodplain drying dynamics compared with the coarse resolution models, although maximum inundation levels were simulated equally well at all resolutions tested.

Automated Surface Runoff Estimation with the Spectral Unmixing of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Imagery

This work presents a methodology for the hydrological characterization of natural and urban landscapes, focusing on accurate estimations of infiltration capacity and runoff characteristics. By combining existing methods from the literature, we created a systemic process that integrates satellite-based vegetation maps, topography, and soil permeability data. This process generates a detailed vegetation classification and slope-corrected composite curve number (CNcα) map using information at the subpixel level, which is crucial for estimating excess runoff during intense precipitation events. The algorithm designed with this methodology is automated and utilizes freely accessible multispectral imagery. Leveraging the vegetation–impervious–soil (V-I-S) model, it is assumed that land cover comprises V-I-S components at each pixel. Automated Music and spectral Separability-based Endmember Selection is employed on a generic spectral library to obtain the most relevant V-I-S endmember spectra for a particular image, which is then employed in multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis to obtain V-I-S fraction maps. The derived fractions are utilized in combination with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index to adapt the CNcα map to different seasons and climatic conditions. The methodology was applied to Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, over a four-year period to validate the methodology and quantify the increase in the impervious surface area in the commune and the relationship with the runoff dynamics. This approach provides valuable insights into infiltration and runoff dynamics across diverse temporal and geographic ranges.

ML framework for global river flood predictions based on the Caravan dataset

Reliable prediction of river floods in the first 72 hours can reduce harm because emergency agencies have sufficient time to prepare and deploy for help at the scene. Such river flood prediction models already exist and perform relatively well in most high-income countries. But, due to the limited availability of data, these models are lacking in low-income countries. Here, we offer the first global river flood prediction framework based on the newly published Caravan dataset. Our framework aims to serve as a benchmark for future global river flood prediction research. To support generalizability claims we include custom data evaluation splits. Further, we propose and evaluate a novel two-path LSTM architecture (2P-LSTM) against three baseline models. Finally, we evaluate the generated models on different locations in Africa and Asia that were not part of the Caravan dataset.

The present case study focuses on monitoring the wetness state of the experimental Bibeschbach catchment (10.8 km ² ), located within the Alzette river basin in the Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg over the last three winters (2005-2008). The objectives of this study are (1) to retrieve soil moisture from spaceborne active and passive microwave sensors, namely AMSR-E and ERS-2 SAR, (2) to compare the remote sensing-derived estimates of basin-averaged soil moisture with ground measurements that are performed throughout the catchment.

An intercomparison of remote sensing river discharge estimation algorithms from measurements of river height, width, and slope

Abstract The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission planned for launch in 2020 will map river elevations and inundated area globally for rivers >100 m wide. In advance of this launch, we here evaluated the possibility of estimating discharge in ungauged rivers using synthetic, daily “remote sensing” measurements derived from hydraulic models corrupted with minimal observational errors. Five discharge algorithms were evaluated, as well as the median of the five, for 19 rivers spanning a range of hydraulic and geomorphic conditions. Reliance upon a priori information, and thus applicability to truly ungauged reaches, varied among algorithms: one algorithm employed only global limits on velocity and depth, while the other algorithms relied on globally available prior estimates of discharge. We found at least one algorithm able to estimate instantaneous discharge to within 35% relative root‐mean‐squared error (RRMSE) on 14/16 nonbraided rivers despite out‐of‐bank flows, multichannel planforms, and backwater effects. Moreover, we found RRMSE was often dominated by bias; the median standard deviation of relative residuals across the 16 nonbraided rivers was only 12.5%. SWOT discharge algorithm progress is therefore encouraging, yet future efforts should consider incorporating ancillary data or multialgorithm synergy to improve results.

The FluViSat project: Measuring streamflow from space with very high resolution Planet satellite video

The measurement of streamflow in the world’s rivers is critical to the management of water as a resource and to predicting and managing the impacts of potentially damaging hydrological events such as major floods. The European Space Agency sponsored FluViSat (Fluvial Video from Satellite) project has successfully demonstrated the potential of very high resolution satellite imagery for the determination of water flow speeds, and hence streamflow rates, using established surface velocimetry techniques.Video imagery kindly provided by Planet Labs PBC from the 21 satellites in their SkySat constellation was pre-processed to stabilise and georectify it, and then analysed using Space Time Imaging Velocimetry (STIV) techniques to provide water speed vectors across the river’s surface. The method was successfully demonstrated on rivers in Australia, the UK and Africa, with field based validation undertaken where possible. Additionally, a series of six videos was obtained and analysed to provide near a sequence of observations of flood flows on the Indus River in Pakistan during the devastating flooding of 2022.Benefits of the FluViSat innovation include the ability to observe water flow rates almost anywhere on the planet, the potential for multiple daily repeat observations and largely eliminating the need for locally based people, equipment and infrastructure.This presentation presents results from the research, explains the methods employed to derive and validate flow speeds, and explores opportunities to further enhance the FluViSat methodology.
