Defining basic archetypes of an intelligent agent’s behaviour in an open-ended interactive environment

Despite the emergence of advanced technologies, the behavioural complexities remain underexplored, especially from the viewpoint of their potential in interactive installations. This study aims to explore the future interactivity of an agent’s behaviour by envisioning speculative future human operations using a human-controlled interactive installation called LumiLand. This empirical study reveals that an agent can craft a user experience by (1) controlling the plot, (2) cocreating content with a user in a social manner, and (3) promptly adjusting undefined behaviours and situations. Based on Janlert and Stolterman’s interaction model, we present an interaction flow with four primary classifications: Leading, Responding, Poking, and Linking. We believe that a human-centered approach for understanding agent interactivity could help create entertaining human–computer interactions (HCI) by improving the agent design and exploring the challenges that will be faced during such interactions.

SurfaceLens: near-surface spatial interaction with science museum exhibits

Smartphone applications have become an essential tool for museums because of their positive impact on visitor experience. However, smartphones can potentially distract visitors from the exhibit, crippling the hands-on experience. In this study, we present SurfaceLens which is a smartphone-based peripheral device enabling near-surface spatial interaction with exhibits. SurfaceLens detects proximity, location on the surface, and orientation of the device while a visitor moves it along the surface of exhibits like using a magnifying glass. It provides an information space and audio-haptic feedback reflecting its location and orientation so that the visitor can feel like seeing-through the exhibit. We compared this near-surface spatial interaction with on-screen touch interaction to investigate their effect on visitor experience and behaviour. The results indicate that SurfaceLens provided a more intuitive and transparent understanding of the content when used as an observation tool. Moreover, narrowing down the distance between visitors and exhibits promotes exploratory behaviours.

Sketchnote: Sketch-Based Visualization of Problem Decomposition in Block-Based Programming

Block-based programming effectively supports processes based on the syntactic and conceptual knowledge of programming; however, its effectiveness is limited to processes that require strategic knowledge. To resolve the problem, we present Sketchnote, which visualizes the problem decomposition process with sketching and multi-layered structure in block-based programming. Sketchnote allows programmers to sketch in the block attachment slots before inserting the actual code blocks. The multi-layer structure of Sketchnote also visualizes the hierarchy of code while extending the brick metaphor of block-based programming.

Consumer Perceptions of Retailers’ Private Brands: The Roles of Self-Construal and Brand Trust

본 연구는 프라이빗 브랜드에 대한 소비자들의 인식이 낮은 가격과 낮은 품질로 구분되며 이러한 소비자 인식에 영향을 주는 요소가 무엇인지를 확인하기 위해 진행되었다. 이를 위해 자아해석과 브랜드 신뢰를 주요 변수로 제안하였다. 실험 1의 결과, 독립적 자아해석의 소비자들은 프라이빗 브랜드에서 낮은 품질을 더 많이 인식하지만, 상호의존적 자아해석의 소비자들은 낮은 가격 수준을 더 많이 인식하는 것으로 나타났다. 이로 인해 독립적 자아해석의 소비자들은 내셔널 브랜드보다 프라이빗 브랜드에 더 부정적인 구매의도를 보였지만 상호의존적 자아해석의 소비자들은 반대로 더 긍정적인 구매의도를 보였다. 브랜드 신뢰의 효과를 조사한 실험 2에서는 브랜드 신뢰가 높을 경우 제품 유형과 자아해석의 상호작용 효과가 사라지는 것으로 나타났다. 브랜드 신뢰는 소비자들의 자아해석과 관계없이 제품에 대해 긍정적으로 인식하고 높은 구매의도를 가지게 하였다. 마지막으로 본 연구가 가지고 있는 이론적, 실무적 시사점과 함께 향후 연구를 위한 지침을 제시하였다.

An Insight into Drug Repositioning for the Development of Novel Anti-Cancer Drugs

Increased investments and development of new technologies in drug discovery have barely improved the outcome of medicinal entities in the drug discovery market from a long time. Minimal success rates of drug approvals, poor safety profiles, and long development processes are some of many hurdles encountered in the drug discovery field. Therefore, drug repurposing can provide an alternative approach to meet the demands of the new, potent and safe anti-cancer agents in terms of both economic cost and time efficiency. The common molecular pathways of different diseases and secondary indications of most of the approved drugs, and advances in genomics, informatics and biology, as well as the availability of approved or safe drug libraries can certainly provide an improved and efficient way of screening safer drugs for new indications. Promising results of drug repurposing in different therapeutic areas have encouraged the scientific community to discover new drugs for different diseases using this methodology. Herein, we provide a general overview of structurally and functionally diverse approved drugs that have been repurposed as anti-cancer drugs.

Fine dust inflow paths and heating load variation based on field measurement of air tightness in two Korean schools

This study aimed to determine the effects of fine dust reduction, as well as the energy load reduction in association with the improvement plans by measuring the airtightness and indoor and outdoor fine dust concentrations in middle and high school classrooms and by identifying the fine dust inflow paths. The air tightness and indoor and outdoor fine dust concentrations were measured at two schools, and the paths of outdoor fine dust inflow were identified for an extensive analysis of the effects of fine dust reduction and the energy load reduction in association with improvement plans. Air tightness in the classroom at school A and B was improved by 32.26% and 38.58% with sealing, respectively. Analyzing the outdoor air inflow paths at school B according to the variation in air tightness, the probability of outdoor air inflow increased in the following order from the highest to the lowest: corridor windows, corridor doors, exterior windows, supply and exhaust units. For the rate of reduction in heating load, the highest rate was shown to be 27% at school A with improved air tightness at the exterior windows and 32% at school B with improved air tightness at the interior doors. This is expected to be reflected in the selection of equipment such as heat pumps and show cost-saving effects such as capacity reduction.
