Full‐Tracking Algorithm for Convective Thunderstorm System From Initiation to Complete Dissipation

Abstract Accurate tracking of all components (including core, anvil, and cirrus) of deep convective systems (DCSs) throughout their lifecycle is key to quantifying their impacts on radiative forcing, especially of the anvil and cirrus. Here, a new Full‐tracking Algorithm for Convective Thunderstorm System is developed based on geostationary satellite. It successfully tracks DCSs starting from the initial core to complete dissipation of cirrus detrained from them, and integrates all the related components that split from the initial convective core into a whole DCS. Results show that more than half of the tracked DCSs experience splitting evolutions, with an average of eight sub‐cores during their lifetime. With tracking cirrus generated by DCSs, the lifetime of DCSs is lengthened by up to 10 hr, and their area is enlarged by 16% on average. Generally, long‐lived DCSs have lower cloud top temperature, greater rainfall, and larger area, with more frequent splitting evolutions than short‐lived DCSs. Additionally, DCSs always reach their peaks within 6 hr after initiation regardless of their lifetime. This paper provides a basis for further quantifying the evolution of DCS properties, their impacts on the global radiation budget, and the water cycle in the climate system.

Coarse sea spray inhibits lightning

The known effects of thermodynamics and aerosols can well explain the thunderstorm activity over land, but fail over oceans. Here, tracking the full lifecycle of tropical deep convective cloud clusters shows that adding fine aerosols significantly increases the lightning density for a given rainfall amount over both ocean and land. In contrast, adding coarse sea salt (dry radius > 1 μm), known as sea spray, weakens the cloud vigor and lightning by producing fewer but larger cloud drops, which accelerate warm rain at the expense of mixed-phase precipitation. Adding coarse sea spray can reduce the lightning by 90% regardless of fine aerosol loading. These findings reconcile long outstanding questions about the differences between continental and marine thunderstorms, and help to understand lightning and underlying aerosol-cloud-precipitation interaction mechanisms and their climatic effects.

Opposing comparable large effects of fine aerosols and coarse sea spray on marine warm clouds

Abstract Fine aerosols, by acting as cloud condensation nuclei, suppress rainfall and enhance the albedo and coverage of marine warm clouds, thereby partly counteracting the greenhouse-induced warming. While this is relatively well documented, the co-existing opposite effects of giant cloud condensation nuclei from coarse sea spray aerosols are poorly quantified. Here, satellite measurements show that the effects of coarse sea spray aerosols have comparable magnitudes with opposite sign to those of fine aerosols. For fixed cloud liquid water path and coarse sea spray aerosols, increasing fine aerosols decreased rainfall flux and cloud drop effective radius by a factor of 1/4 and 40%, respectively. Conversely, for fixed fine aerosols and cloud liquid water path, added coarse sea spray aerosols enhanced rainfall flux and cloud drop effective radius by a factor of 4 and 35%, respectively. These large and contrasting effects are independent on meteorological conditions. These processes must be fully incorporated into climate models to faithfully represent aerosol effects on clouds, precipitation, and radiative forcing.

Sensitivity analysis of aerosol based on MODIS remote sensing data

In combination with the severe haze pollution on December 5, 2013 in Shanghai, China, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) remote sensing images are taken as data sources tries to use V5.2 algorithm to monitor the severe haze pollution. The sensitivity analysis result of continental aerosols, marine aerosols, dust aerosols and city type aerosols show that there is only continental aerosol model that corresponds to the fundamentals of the V5.2 algorithm for MODIS remote sensing data. On the basis of the sensitivity analysis of various aerosol types in terms of MODIS remote sensing data, the continental aerosol type was more identical with the characteristic of MODIS remote sensing data and the actual situation in the Shanghai area. The maximum aerosol optical depth lies in the Baoshan District and Jiading District, the minimum aerosol optical depth lies in the Chongming County, which is near the Yangtze River estuary and coastal areas of Pudong New Area.
