Zero Thermal Expansion Achieved by an Electrolytic Hydriding Method in La(Fe,Si)₁₃ Compounds

The La(Fe,Si) 13 ‐based compounds have been recently developed as promising negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials by elemental substitution, which show large, isotropic and nonhysteretic NTE properties as well as relatively high electrical and thermal conductivities. In this paper, the La(Fe,Si) 13 hydrides are prepared by a novel electrolytic hydriding method. Furthermore, the thermal expansion and magnetic properties of La(Fe,Si) 13 hydrides are investigated by the variable‐temperature X‐ray diffraction and physical property measurement system. Fascinatingly, it is found that room‐temperature NTE properties and zero thermal expansion (ZTE) properties with broad operation‐temperature window (20–275 K) have been achieved after electrolytic hydriding. The further magnetic properties combined with theoretical analysis reveal that the improvements of NTE and ZTE properties in the La(Fe,Si) 13 hydrides are ascribed to the variations of magnetic exchange couplings after hydrogenation. The present results highlight the potential applications of La(Fe,Si) 13 hydrides with room‐temperature NTE and broad operation‐temperature window ZTE properties.

Negative Thermal Expansion in (Hf,Ti)Fe₂ Induced by the Ferromagnetic and Antiferromagnetic Phase Coexistence

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is an intriguing physical phenomenon that can be used in the applications of thermal expansion adjustment of materials. In this study, we report a NTE compound of (Hf,Ti)Fe2, while both end members of HfFe2 and TiFe2 show positive thermal expansion. The results reveal that phase coexistence is detected in the whole NTE zone, in which one phase is ferromagnetic (FM), while the other is antiferromagnetic (AFM). With increasing temperature, the FM phase is gradually transformed to the AFM one. The NTE phenomenon occurs in the present (Hf,Ti)Fe2 because of the fact that the unit cell volume of the AFM phase is smaller than that of the FM phase, and the mass fraction of the AFM phase increases with increasing temperature. The construction of phase coexistence can be a method to achieve NTE materials in future studies.

Mechanical behaviors of hyberbranched epoxy toughened bisphenol F epoxy resin for cryogenic applications

Epoxy resins have been widely employed in cryogenic engineering fields. In this work, bisphenol F epoxy resin was modified by an aromatic polyester hyperbranched epoxy resin (HTDE-2). Mechanical behaviors of the modified epoxy resins in terms of tensile properties and impact property were studied at both room and cryogenic temperatures. Moreover, the toughening mechanism was discussed by fracture surface morphology analysis. The results demonstrated that, the mechanical properties of composites initially increased until reaches the maximum value with increasing the mass content of the HTDE-2, and then decreased at both room temperature (RT) and 77K. Especially, the impact strength at 77 K was improved 40.7% compared with the pure epoxy matrix when 10 wt% HTDE-2 was introduced. The findings suggest that the HTDE-2 will be an effective toughener for the brittle bisphenol F epoxy resin for cryogenic applications.

Dielectric AlN/epoxy and SiC/epoxy composites with enhanced thermal and dynamic mechanical properties at low temperatures

In a superconducting magnet, the thermal properties of the insulating material at low temperatures is an important technical index to ensure the normal operation of a superconducting coil. Herein, a low-temperature thermal conductivity testing device with a tiny uncertainty was developed to measure the composites. Furthermore, SiC/epoxy and AlN/epoxy composites were prepared and their properties were tested at low temperatures. The results showed that the composites have a better thermal conductivity at low temperatures than pure epoxy. In addition, the AlN/epoxy and SiC/epoxy composites have excellent dynamic mechanical properties and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Due to the fair thermal and dynamic mechanical properties, the composites will have potential application in the superconducting magnet.
