Size Control of Nd-Fe-B Precursor Particles Prepared by Spray Drying and Its Effect on the Magnetic Properties of Nd-Fe-B Alloy Powders after Reduction-Diffusion

In this study, we fabricated $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ hard magnetic powders with various sizes via spray drying combined with reduction-diffusion process. Spray drying is widely used to produce nearly spherical particles that are relatively homogeneous. Thus, the precursor particles were prepared by spray drying using the aqueous solution containing Nd salts, Fe salts and boric acid with the target stoichiometric composition of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$. The mean particle sizes of the spray-dried powders are in the range from one to seven micrometer, which are adjusted by controlling the concentrations of precursor solutions. After debinding the as-prepared precursor particles, ball milling was also conducted to control the particle sizes of Nd-Fe-B oxide powders. The resulting particles with different sizes were subjected to subsequent treatments including hydrogen reduction, Ca reduction and washing for CaO removal. The size effect of Nd-Fe-B oxide particles on the formation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase and magnetic properties was investigated.

Cylindrical posts of Ag/SiO₂/Au multi-segment layer patterns for highly efficient surface enhanced Raman scattering

We fabricated a regular array of Ag/SiO2/Au multi-segment cylindrical nanopatterns to create a highly efficient surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrate using an advanced soft-nanoimprint lithographic technique. The SERS spectra results for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules on the Ag/SiO2/Au multi-segment nanopatterns show that the highly ordered patterns and interlayer thickness are responsible for enhancing the sensitivity and reproducibility, respectively, The multi-segment nanopattern with a silica interlayer generates significant SERS enhancement (∼EF = 1.2 × 106) as compared to that of the bimetallic (Ag/Au) nanopatterns without a dielectric gap (∼EF = 1.0 × 104). Further precise control of the interlayer distances between the two metals plays an essential role in enhancing SERS performance for detecting low concentrations of analytes such as fluorescent (Rhodamine 6G) and DNA molecules. Therefore, the highly ordered multi-segment patterns provide great sensitivity and reproducibility of SERS based detection, resulting in a high performance of the SERS substrate.

Tin nanoparticle thin film electrodes fabricated by the vacuum filtration method for enhanced battery performance

A novel method for fabricating tin nanoparticle thin film electrodes that show good performance in lithium ion batteries during cycling is reported. The vacuum filtration method has the advantage of affording a high degree of dispersion of the electrode components, thereby providing good electrical contacts between the tin nanoparticles and the conductive carbon or current collector. The reversible capacity and initial Coulombic efficiency are 726 mA h g−1 and 85.3%, respectively, with this thin film electrode. Cycle life performance tests under real battery conditions show that the battery capacity and reaction peaks remained stable for up to 50 cycles. SEM shows that the uniform morphology of the vacuum filtered film was maintained throughout the cycle life test. This novel vacuum filtration method for providing nanoparticle-based film electrodes has further potential applications for use in various devices such as high power, thin film batteries, supercapacitors and organic–inorganic hybrid photovoltaic cells.

Metal Nanoparticle-Loaded Microgels with Selective Permeability for Direct Detection of Small Molecules in Biological Fluids

We report a microfluidic strategy for creating semipermeable microgels containing metal nanoparticles to directly detect small molecules included in the solution of large adhesive proteins using surface-enhanced Raman scattering. With a capillary microfluidic device, gold nanoparticle-laden microgels are prepared to have uniform size. The microgels allow diffusion of smaller molecules than mesh size of their gel network while excluding larger molecules. This enables the selective infusion of small analytes onto the surface of gold nanoparticles from the solutions of adhesive proteins, thereby providing high Raman intensity by metal-surface enhancement; otherwise, proteins adsorb the surface, which significantly reduces the intensity. Therefore, this microgel platform enables the direct detection of analytes from biological fluids and obviates complicated pre- or post-treatment of samples. In addition, the microgels are able to be injected into target volume such as vessels or living organisms, which are then either recovered for analysis or potentially analyzed in situ. This simple but pragmatic method will provide new opportunity in a wide range of molecular detection applications based on Raman spectrum.

Synthesis of Skeletal‐Structured Biporous Silicate Powders through Microcolloidal Crystal Templating

Biporous silicates with both a MCM-41 mesophase and a skeletal macrophase (see Figure) are synthesized using a new and simple method. Transmission electron microscopy confirms the existence of both mesopores and macropores, and a model of the formation of skeletal macroporosity is proposed. The synthetic method could lead to larger-scale production of powdered biporous silicates.

Single Walled Carbon Nanotube-Based Electrical Biosensor for the Label-Free Detection of Pathogenic Bacteria

We herein describe the development of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-based electrical biosensor consisting of a two-terminal resistor, and report its use for the specific, label-free detection of pathogenic bacteria via changes in conductance. The ability of this biosensor to recognize different pathogenic bacteria was analyzed, and conditions were optimized with different probe concentrations. Using this system, the reference strains and clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were successfully detected; in both cases, the sensor showed a detection limit of 10 CFU. This SWNT-based electrical biosensor will prove useful for the development of highly sensitive and specific handheld pathogen detectors.

Study on synthesis of Zr–Ti alloy powder using molten magnesium

A new process of magnesium thermal reduction was successfully attempted to produce Zr–Ti alloy powder. A gas mixture of ZrCl4+TiCl4 was injected to molten magnesium, and the chloride components were reduced by magnesium, leading to the formation of MgCl2. The Zr and Ti atoms that were not reacted with magnesium were condensed to particle forms inside liquid magnesium and magnesium chloride. In the next stage, the magnesium and its chloride were fully removed by 1–5%HCl solution at room temperature. The target compositions of Zr–Ti alloy powder could be obtained in the ranges of Zr–(0–20 wt-%)Ti by controlling the mole fraction of each ZrCl4 and TiCl4 gas. Its purity was achieved to ∼99·4%, and the average particle size was almost found to be in the level of several micrometres.
