Active and Passive Microwave Sensors as a Tool to Monitor Soil Moisture Over Winter

The present case study focuses on monitoring the wetness state of the experimental Bibeschbach catchment (10.8 km ² ), located within the Alzette river basin in the Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg over the last three winters (2005-2008). The objectives of this study are (1) to retrieve soil moisture from spaceborne active and passive microwave sensors, namely AMSR-E and ERS-2 SAR, (2) to compare the remote sensing-derived estimates of basin-averaged soil moisture with ground measurements that are performed throughout the catchment.

Land-Cover Classification of Hypertemporal Data using Ensemble Systems

This study addresses the problem of multiannual supervised land-cover classification using hypertemporal data from the "Mediterranean Extended Daily One Km AVHRR Data Set" (MEDOKADS) and a decision fusion approach. 10 day NDVI maximum value composite data from the Iberian Peninsula for every year in the observation period (1989 to 2004) were preprocessed using Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF-) transformation. The MNF-scores from each year were then individually pre-classified using support-vector machines (SVM). The continuous outputs from the SVM, which can be interpreted in terms of posterior probabilities, where used to train a second-order SVM classifier to merge the information within consecutive years. The decision fusion strategy significantly increased the classification accuracy compared to pre-classification results. Increasing the temporal range in decision fusion from a two year to five-year period enhanced the total accuracy. The outcomes from the selected approach were compared with another ensemble method (majority voting) and with a single SVM expert that was trained for comparable multiannual periods. The results suggest that decision fusion is superior to the other methods.

Coal extraction in the Lorraine coal field ended in 2004, after 150 years of mining.Stopping of mine drainage pumping caused the flooding of 180 million m 3 of mine cavities.After around 2 to 5 years of filling, pumping became necessary to keep pace with rising levels of iron-containing water.The elevated levels of iron mineralisation in the mine water are such that the water cannot be discharged directly into the natural environment, making treatment a necessity.In the Lorraine coal field, the complete treatment system will comprise three treatment plants with a maximum cumulative flow rate estimated at 1,000 m 3 /h.The plants are of the passive type with the mine water flowing over aeration cascades into settling tanks and lagoons planted with reeds, before being discharged into the natural environment.Two plants are currently operating, one since 2009 the other since 2012.The La Houve plant, in operation since 2009, has provided experience over three years and this feedback enables a comparison with initial predictions.The first results show that the model for decrease in the iron concentration of the mine water used initially does not fit with the La Houve case.We have formulated a hypothesis allowing adjustment of the model to observations; other phenomena remain to be studied to explain the behaviour of the mine reservoir.Where treatment plant efficiency is concerned, 98 per cent of iron is removed on average and there is a seasonal pattern.

On the potential of MetOp ASCAT‐derived soil wetness indices as a new aperture for hydrological monitoring and prediction: a field evaluation over Luxembourg

Abstract In situ soil moisture data from the Bibeschbach experimental catchment in Luxembourg are used to evaluate relative surface soil moisture observed with the MetOp‐A Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT). Filtered and bias‐corrected surface soil wetness indices (SWIs) derived from coarse‐resolution (25 km) C‐band scatterometer observations are shown to be highly correlated ( r = 0.86) with catchment‐averaged soil moisture measured in the field. The combination of ASCAT and ENVISAT Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) data sets yields high‐resolution (1 km) relative surface soil moisture that is equally well correlated with in situ measurements. It is concluded that for soil moisture monitoring applications at a catchment scale, the two soil moisture products are equivalent. The best correlation between the SWI derived from ASCAT and ASCAT‐ASAR with in situ soil moisture observations at ca. 5 cm depth is obtained with a characteristic time length parameter T equal to 288 h. These results suggest that satellite‐derived surface soil wetness may serve as proxy for soil storage that enables the monitoring of abrupt switches in river system dynamics to appear when an effective field capacity is exceeded and rapid subsurface stormflow is initiated. In catchments where soil moisture is the main controlling factor of rapid subsurface flow, MetOp ASCAT–derived SWI has the potential to monitor how a river system approaches a critical threshold. Bassin houiller lorrain : réhabilitation du triangle de Marienau, des travaux à la surveillance

Le Triangle de Marienau est situe de part et d'autre de la France et de l'Allemagne. Les Houilleres du Bassin de Lorraine y ont exploite des lagunes et des bassins de decantation des eaux de process d'une cokerie pendant 30 ans. Des investigations et des etudes menees entre 2005 et 2007 par Charbonnage de France ont mis en evidence 109 000 m3 de sols pollues (hydrocarbures, composes aromatiques, cyanures, metaux) dont 3300 m3 de goudrons purs. Des travaux ont ete realises de 2007 a 2009 afin de supprimer les risques par contact et gerer les eaux. Un confinement vertical (paroi moulee, 4 000 m3), un confinement horizontal (complexe geocomposites, 65 000 m2), et un horizon de sol vegetalise ont ete mis en place. Un dispositif de surveillance permet un suivi des eaux internes et souterraines ainsi que des gaz (piezometres et puits).
