Of 305 consecutive patients with symptomatic multiple myeloma treated between 1965 and 1974, a total of 4% survived ten years. Virtually all were less than 65 years old, presented with low or intermediate stage disease, and responded well to chemotherapy. Prolonged unmaintained remissions, slow tumor growth, and recontrol of relapsing disease were common. Acute leukemia caused the death of two of six long-term survivors. Patients treated since 1974 lived longer than those seen previously, a finding attributed to better control of complications and more effective combination chemotherapy.

Chondromyxoid fibroma involving the sphenoid sinus: Case report and literature review

We present the case of a 62-year-old woman with chondromyxoid fibroma of the sphenoid sinus. Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare bone tumor found most prevalently in long bones, so its presence at the cranial base is especially uncommon. The presence of a monoclonal gammopathy of undermined significance (MGUS) prompted consideration and investigation of a plasma cell disorder; however, CT and MRI findings followed by biopsy led to the correct diagnosis of chondromyxoid fibroma.

Macroglobulinaemic lymphoma presenting with perirenal masses

Perirenal masses are an uncommon manifestation of lymphoma. They are almost always associated with lymphoma elsewhere and usually represent direct spread from retroperitoneal lymph nodes (Jafri et al, 1982; Heiken et al, 1986). Renal or perirenal lymphoma may present as an abdominal mass, hydronephrosis, impairment of renal function, or as an incidental finding (Jafri et al, 1982; Horii et al, 1983; Heiken et al, 1986). We describe an unusual case of macroglobulinaemic lymphoma in a patient who presented with perirenal masses, correlating the findings on ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR).
