Effect of Zn addition on optical properties and microstructure of Y₂O₃:Eu nanopowders prepared by combustion method

Abstract Y 2 O 3 :Eu and Y 2 O 3 :Eu,Zn nano powders were prepared by both conventional combustion and microwave assistance combustion (MAC) methods. The nanopowders obtained here were investigated by means of X‐ray diffractometry (XRD), Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chromaticities of samples were also computed from Photoluminescence emission spectra, as well as lattice constant and micro‐structural parameters (crystallite size and micro‐strain) which were computed from XRD patterns using Rietveld refinement method. Results showed that incorporation of Zn in Y 2 O 3 :Eu lattice enhanced the PL intensity and chromaticity of Y 2 O 3 :Eu phosphor. It was also found that the samples prepared by microwave assistance combustion method had higher crystallinity, density, chromaticity and PL intensity than the samples prepared by conventional combustion method. SEM micrographs showed that the size of particles produced in microwave was smaller than that of samples produced in electric furnace. (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Magnetite-Silver Core-Shell Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Characterizes and Optical Properties

Abstract Fe3O4 and Fe3O4/Ag core-shell nanocomposite powders were synthesized via the co-precipitation method. Structure, microstructure, magnetic, and optical properties of Fe3O4/Ag and Fe3O4 were studied. XRD patterns and Uv-Vis spectra showed that nanostructure Fe3O4 and Fe3O4/Ag particles were successfully synthesized. AFM and MFM mode micrographs of Fe3O4 and Fe3O4/Ag powders confirm the formation of Fe3O4 particles in the nano-scale range. Both Fe3O4 and Fe3O4/Ag composite powders represented the superparamagnetic behavior due to the formation of nano-sized Fe3O4 particles. Furthermore, in-situ synthesis of Ag on the surface of magnetite nanoparticles increased the particle size, resulting in a decrease in the saturation magnetization. Moreover, based on the Maxwell-Garnet effective medium theory, a theoretical model was developed to determine the optical properties of suspended core-shell nanoparticles. A very good agreement may be found between the theoretical and experimental results. In addition, the local electric field in the particles, evaluated using the numerical Finite Element Method, showed that the electric field in the magnetite core may be amplified up to 20 times at the symmetrical SPR wavelength mode, depending on the silver shell thickness.

Synthesis of Hollow Tadpole-Like Silica Particles

Hollow tadpole-like silica particles were successfully synthesized via the microemulsion synthesis method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and sodium citrate as starting materials in the presence of isopropanol as a solvent. The effects of TEOS/ammonia (T/A) ratio, PVP molecular weight, synthesis temperature, and sodium citrate concentration on the morphology of particles were investigated. The results demonstrated that synthesis temperature has a vital effect on the morphology of particles. Also, microstructure analysis showed that the length of the silica rods was tunable in the range 1.2–5.2 µm. Control of the length was obtained by adjusting the synthesis temperature and PVP molecular weight. The transmission electron microscopy results clearly confirmed that the tadpole-like particles were surprisingly hollow and they provided an open side that was completely different from the previous reports. The inner diameter of the silica rods could be adjusted in the range 50–200 nm. The existence of such a considerable open side may be practically appreciated in many potential applications such as bio-immobilization.

Phase transformation of FeCr₂O₄ to (Fe,Cr)₂O₃ solid solution pigment powders: Effect of post‐heating temperature

Abstract Iron chromite powders were synthesized via solution combustion route using iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate and chromium(III) nitrate nonahydrate as starting materials, as well as glycine–urea, glycine–citric acid, and glycine–ethylene glycol mixtures as fuels. The effect of postheating at different temperatures on the structure, molecular, microstructure, and chromatic properties of powders and tiles colored by in‐glaze powders was studied. The X‐ray diffraction patterns showed that as‐synthesized powders were obtained in crystalline FeCr 2 O 4 phases moreover, postheating of the powders led to d ‐space shift and oxidation and formation of (Fe,Cr) 2 O 3 solid solution phase regardless of fuel type. Phase transformation of FeCr 2 O 4 to (Fe,Cr) 2 O 3 solid solution was observed at 500/750°C depending on the dominant phase of as‐synthesized particles. Fourier transform infrared analysis illustrated that the band positions of octahedral M–O and tetrahedral M–O bonds were shifted due to Fe cations movement from their position and lattice shrinkage by increasing of post‐heating temperature. Moreover, scanning electron micrographs showed that Fe 0.7 Cr 1.3 O 3 semispherical fine particles were formed from porous spongy FeCr 2 O 4 particles due to oxidation and phase transformation during the postheating. Furthermore, chromatic properties of the samples were represented. The color properties of the pigments showed that the formation of brown pigments is provided with the phase transformation from FeCr 2 O 4 to (Fe,Cr) 2 O 3 at a temperature of up to 750°C. Moreover, increasing the color purity to this temperature is related to the removal of residual carbonaceous matters. The chromatic properties of the glazed tiles colored using the pigments showed that postheating between 250 and 500°C led to more brown appearance.

Co-precipitation Synthesis of CdTe/ ZnS, ZnSe, CdS and CdSe Core-Shell Quantum Dots

In the present work CdTe/ ZnS, ZnSe, CdS, CdSe core-shell quantum dots were synthesized via co-precipitation route. The effect of reflux intervals from 1 to 7 hours, on the CdTe cores, characteristics such as: photoluminescence properties, band gap, structure, and microstructure were studied. Results showed that synthesis with the reflux time of 1 hour led to proper CdTe core with the size of about 4nm, emission wavelength of 555 nm, and band gap of 2.25 eV. More reflux time caused to particle size enlargement, emission shift to higher wavelength values, and band gap decrease. Moreover, ZnS, ZnSe, CdS, and CdSe shells were in-situ synthesized on the CdTe cores. Formation of these shells led to emission red shift with the wavelength up to 591 nm and band gap decrease to 2.15 eV.
