POLYCHRONOUS EVOLUTION OF NEOARCHEAN BANDED IRON FORMATION IN THE MAIN ORE SEQUENCE OF THE KOSTOMUKSHA GREENSTONE BELT: THE AGE OF ZIRCONS AND ACCESSORY MINERALS

The banded iron formation (BIF) of the Neoarchean (2.76-2.74 Ga) Kostomuksha Formation of the Kostomuksha greenstone belt of the Karelian Craton was shown to contain the following accessory minerals: zircon, apatite, monazite and barite. Zircons from BIF have 2.9-2.8 Ga magmatic cores indicating the presence of Mesoarchean rocks in source areas. Metamorphic zircons were dated at 2.73, 2.64 and 1.86 Ga. They mark the polymetamorphic evolution.

Neoarchean sanukitoids from the Karelian and Bundelkhand cratons: comparison of composition, distribution and geodynamic setting

This study presents comparison of distribution and composition of Neoarchean sanukitoid massifs from Karelian (Fennoscandian Shield) and Bundelkhand (Indian Shield) Cratons. It has been established, that sanukitoid massifs from both the studied cratons are localised in linear zones, which orientation is close to the greenstone belts. Neoarchean (2.56-2.53 Ga) sanukitoids from Bundelkhand are geochemically similar to those from Central and Western Karelian zones (2.72-2.68 Ga; Karelian Craton) while they are less differentiated as compared to the sanukitoids fromEastern Karelia(2.74-2.73 Ga). The geochemical similarities in sanukitoids from both these cratons along with their association with similar age volcanics and localised in linear zones indicate that subduction related processes were responsible for their formation in both Karelian as well as Bundelkhand craton.

The granite and gneisses rocks are well exposed around Toneta, Tilwara and Chirbatiyakhal region in the Lesser Garhwal Himalaya have less studied which consider as Paleoproterozoic age. The granites from Toneta area are classified as K-rich peraluminous granite with low Na2O varies from 0.85 to 2.4 wt.% and high K2O content varies from 5.0 to 6.9 wt.%. The average Al2O3 (14.16 wt.%) in the granite is greater than the total alkalies (Na2O+K2O = Av. 7.62 wt.%), the Titania (TiO2) content is low ranging from 0.1 to 0.28 wt. %. In the Y + Nb – Rb, Y – Nb, Ta + Yb – Rb, and Yb – Ta discrimination diagram of Pearce et al. (1984) show that the Toneta granites mostly plots within the syn-collision granite fields. This is typical collisional granite.

BELOMORIAN MOBILE BELT AS PART OF THE NUNA/COLUMBIA SUPERCONTINENT: NEW PALEOMAGNETIC AND GEOLOGICAL DATA

Analysis of the evolution of the Belomorian Mobile Belt (BMB) suggests that the metamorphism of gabbroic rocks was accompanied by their remagnetization and that lateral variations in magnetization constituents carry evidence for the time sequence of the extension of the western foreland of the Lapland-Kola orogen (LKO) to upper crustal levels. The latter formed while the Nuna/Columbia Supercontinent was being made up. The combined study of metamorphosed Paleoproterozoic igneous complexes has revealed a remagnetization trend in BMB rocks. The study has shown that the remagnetization front spread here from the north-west to the south-east and that it seems to be due to the collision pattern upon LKO formation. In addition, remagnetization in the southern BMB and in the southeastern Karelian Craton, dated at 1.65-1.60 Ga, was revealed. It seems to be due to the final episodes of formation of the Svecofennian orogen.

Seismogeological section of the Earth's crust of North Karelia along the profile of Kandalaksha - Kem

CDP, DSS and seismotomographic section along the North Karelian portion of geotraverse 1-ЕВ (Kandalaksha - Kem) have made it possible for the first time to study in detail the earth crust under the Belomorian province within the limits of the Phenno-Scandian Shield. Correlation and integrated interpretation of CDP time sections, DSS multi-wave sections and geological data show that the results obtained by the seismic methods differ markedly, but the data obtained by both methods are important for geological interpretation because they emphasize different environmental characteristics. Tectonic dislocation zones, extending to M-discontinu-ity, were delineated and traced downwards. The crystalline crust of the Belomorian province was shown to have a nappe tectonics. Horizontal variation in velocity correlates with heterogeneities in crustal section responsible for its blocky geological structure. The heterogeneity pattern of the crust seems to reflect collision tectonics, and as a result tectonic slits of different composition were superposed.
