INJECTION SYSTEM FOR KHARKOV X-RAY SOURCE NESTOR

During the last three years a Kharkov X-ray generator NESTOR is under design and construction in NSC KIPT. According to the design report, electrons are injected in the storage ring at 100 MeV and ramped up to final energy 225 MeV. Due to compact design of the ring the injection trajectory of the beam will pass through fringe field of a NESTOR bending magnet. It brings additional difficulties on design of an injection channel. In the paper the layout, results of design and calculations of NESTOR injector channel are presented. The channel consists of two bending magnets, five-lens, asymmetrical, objective and two-lens matching cell to compensate dispersion and focusing effects of a dipole magnet fringe field and injection system elements (inflector). Presented results shows that designed lattice provides matching of injected beam parameters with the storage ring acceptance, is stable to element alignment errors and is easy controlled. The final values of the channel lens gradients can be defined only after measurements of inflector field profile.

The magnet system of the synchrotron radiation source ISI-800

The magnet system is described for the 800 MeV electron storage ring designed at the KIPT as a synchrotron radiation source. Given are the main characteristics of the storage ring magnet elements and the system of beam transport from the 120 MeV electron linac to the storage ring, production and positioning tolerances are also presented. Beam injection and reference orbit correction systems are described in brief. The construction of the complex is scheduled to start in 1994.< >

LATTICE DESIGN FOR THE COMPACT X-RAY SOURCE BASED ON COMPTON SCATTERING

A lattice of the modernized electron storage ring N-100 is designed for the compact X-ray source based on Compton back scattering with existing dipole magnets. New lattice configuration allows to obtain the transverse size of electron beam ∼ 35 µm at the interaction point of electron and laser and photon flux about 10 14 s -1 . The basic parameters of the new storage ring lattice are given. The facility will permit to study the process of laser cooling of the electron beam in the storage ring.

The operating modes and the x-ray parameters of x-ray generator NESTOR based on Compton scattering

An international co-operative project to develop an advanced X-ray source on the basis of Compton back-scattering is in progress. The goal is the re-configuration of the Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology (KIPT) N-100M storage ring to support the efficient interaction of its electron beam with a high power pulsed-laser cavity. At equilibrium both the electron and X-ray beams' phase space characteristics are determined by a balance of stochastic photon cooling and emission. In this paper the operating parameters and fundamental spectral properties of the novel source are described.

A compact X-ray source based on Compton scattering

The paper discusses the use of Compton backscattering of an intense laser light on a relativistic electron beam to produce high-intensity /spl gamma/ beams, and also the practicability of the concept. Requirements on the parameters of electron and photon beams are described, and the lattice of the electron storage ring with a beam energy up to 150 MeV is proposed, wherein experiments on intense photon beam generation and laser cooling of the electron beam can be conducted. Electron beam parameters in the storage ring are calculated with due regard for the intrabeam scattering, photon beam parameters are also estimated. The scheme of experiment that enables the production of a photon beam with an intensity of /spl sim/10/sup 13/ s/sup -1/ is proposed.

Survey and Alignment Strategy for Compton X-ray Generator NESTOR

NESTOR facility that is under construction in NSC KIPT (Kharkov, Ukraine) consists of compact 225 MeV electron storage ring, 100 MeV linear accelerator– injector, laser optical system and radiation channel. To provide effective and cheap survey and alignment system for compact facility is crucial task in order to achieve designed X-ray parameters (X-ray intensity up to 10 phot/s). In the article the survey and alignment strategy of Compton generator NESTOR is described. The system uses traditional triangulation method and provides the accuracy of technological equipment alignment equal to 100 mkm.

START-UP OF THE NESTOR FACILITY VACUUM SYSTEM

The Kharkov X-ray generator NESTOR based on Compton backscattering is under commissioning. The vacuum system of the complex integrates a linear accelerator-injector, the beam transport channel and the electron storage ring with energy range from 40 to 225 MeV. Elements of vacuum chambers, pumping facilities, cleaning surfaces procedures are described. Chambers are made of stainless steel (SS). Residual vacuum pretesting pressure of 5×10 -9 Torr in the storage ring chambers has been achieved.

Status of NESTOR

NSC KIPT proposed to construct a new X‐ray and soft ultraviolet source NESTOR with a 40 – 225 MeV electron storage ring in Kharkov. NESTOR is a new type radiation source on the base of Compton scattering and a storage ring. Electrons are injected in the storage ring at 100 MeV and ramped up to final energy of 225 MeV. So, using interaction angle 10° and 150°, the facility covers operation energy range of radiation from soft ultraviolet trough synchrotron radiation from bending magnets up to hard X‐ray radiation through Compton scattering (∼1 eV ∼1 MeV). It is supposed that stored electron beam current will be of about 200 mA. Along with use of Nd:Yag laser of 10 W average power which was developed by High‐Q laser firm and optical resonator with accumulation gain of about 1000 it allows to provide X‐ray radiation flux up to 1011 phot/s. NESTOR is the cooperative facility and its development is supported by Ukrainian government and NATO SfP project ♯977982. It is supposed that NESTOR will be in operation by mid‐2007 year. The status of the project and main facility systems are described in the report.
