Effect of temperature on zooplankton vertical migration velocity

Zooplankton diel vertical migration (DVM) is an ecologically important process, affecting nutrient transport and trophic interactions. Available measurements of zooplankton displacement velocity during the DVM in the field are rare; therefore, it is not known which factors are key in driving this velocity. We measured the velocity of the migrating layer at sunset (upward bulk velocity) and sunrise (downwards velocity) in summer 2015 and 2016 in a lake using the backscatter strength (VBS) from an acoustic Doppler current profiler. We collected time series of temperature, relative change in light intensity chlorophyll-a concentration and zooplankton concentration. Our data show that upward velocities increased during the summer and were not enhanced by food, light intensity or by VBS, which is a proxy for zooplankton concentration and size. Upward velocities were strongly correlated with the water temperature in the migrating layer, suggesting that temperature could be a key factor controlling swimming activity. Downward velocities were constant, likely because Daphnia passively sink at sunrise, as suggested by our model of Daphnia sinking rate. Zooplankton migrations mediate trophic interactions and web food structure in pelagic ecosystems. An understanding of the potential environmental determinants of this behaviour is therefore essential to our knowledge of ecosystem functioning.

Identifying the scaling rules describing ecological patterns across time and space is a central challenge in ecology. Taylor's law of fluctuation scaling, which states that the variance of a population's size or density is proportional to a positive power of the mean size or density, has been widely observed in population dynamics and characterizes variability in multiple scientific domains. However, it is unclear if this phenomenon accurately describes ecological patterns across many orders of magnitude in time, and therefore links otherwise disparate observations. Here, we use water clarity observations from 10,531 days of high-frequency measurements in 35 globally distributed lakes, and lower-frequency measurements over multiple decades from 6342 lakes to test this unknown. We focus on water clarity as an integrative ecological characteristic that responds to both biotic and abiotic drivers. We provide the first documentation that variations in ecological measurements across diverse sites and temporal scales exhibit variance patterns consistent with Taylor's law, and that model coefficients increase in a predictable yet non-linear manner with decreasing observation frequency. This discovery effectively links high-frequency sensor network observations with long-term historical monitoring records, thereby affording new opportunities to understand and predict ecological dynamics on time scales from days to decades.

Flow and mixing in Ascension, a steep, narrow canyon

A thin gash in the continental slope northwest of Monterey Bay, Ascension Canyon, is steep, with sides and axis both strongly supercritical to M 2 internal tides. A hydrostatic model forced with eight tidal constituents shows no major sources feeding energy into the canyon, but significant energy is exchanged between barotropic and baroclinic flows along the tops of the sides, where slopes are critical. Average turbulent dissipation rates observed near spring tide during April are half as large as a two week average measured during August in Monterey Canyon. Owing to Ascension's weaker stratification, however, its average diapycnal diffusivity, 3.9 × 10 −3 m 2 s −1 , exceeded the 2.5 × 10 −3 m 2 s −1 found in Monterey. Most of the dissipation occurred near the bottom, apparently associated with an internal bore, and just below the rim, where sustained cross‐canyon flow may have been generating lee waves or rotors. The near‐bottom mixing decreased sharply around Ascension's one bend, as did vertically integrated baroclinic energy fluxes. Dissipation had a minor effect on energetics, which were controlled by flux divergences and convergences and temporal changes in energy density. In Ascension, the observed dissipation rate near spring tide was 2.1 times that predicted from a simulation using eight tidal constituents averaged over a fortnightly period. The same observation was 1.5 times the average of an M 2 ‐only prediction. In Monterey, the previous observed average was 4.9 times the average of an M 2 ‐only prediction.

Long-term ice phenology records for 78 lakes in the Northern Hemisphere

Lake ice is an important resource supporting water quality, local biodiversity, arctic transportation, and regional economies. Long-term surveys of lake ice collected in situ are the gold standard for monitoring in environmental science., Here, we present ice phenology records for 78 lakes in the Northern Hemisphere spanning up to 578 years. These surveys include 12 different countries across North America and Eurasia collected by researchers, community scientists, priests, and digital observations. This database includes information about ice phenology (ice-on dates, ice-off dates, ice cover duration), lake characteristics (e.g., size, location, names), and meta-data about each data source (e.g., how the data was collected). Our intention is that this database may be used to understand factors driving lake ice patterns and the biological or socio-economic consequences.
