A Highway for Atmospheric Ion Escape from Earth during the Impact of an Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection

Abstract A single satellite hardly measures the overall ion escape rate from a planet. Therefore, the question concerning the long-term atmospheric evolution of whether a planetary magnetic field protects its atmosphere or aggravates atmospheric loss remains unresolved. Here, combined data from multiple platforms including Cluster, DMSP, IMAGE, and Polar satellites and ground stations show that, when an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) arrived, an ion transport “highway” formed in the inner magnetosphere on the strongly magnetized Earth, along which the magnetospheric processes promoted quick and significant atmospheric ion escape. The escape rate merely through this highway probably reached 10 27 s −1 , far exceeding the current overall rates on those nonmagnetized planets, e.g., Mars and Venus. The relevant interplanetary conditions induced by the ICME were extreme by today’s standards but may have been quite common in the ancient solar system. These present-day observations thus allow us to depict a fast but common ion escape scenario on the strongly magnetized planets in ancient times when the Sun was extremely active.

Features of the middle- and low-latitude ionosphere during solar minimum as revealed from COSMIC radio occultation measurements

In this study, the ionospheric electron density profiles retrieved from radio occultation measurements of the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC) mission are analyzed to determine the F-2 layer maximum electron density (NmF2), peak height (h(m)F(2)), and Chapman scale height (H-m). During the deep solar minimum of 2008-2009, NmF2, h(m)F(2), and H-m show complicated seasonal variations, which are generally consistent with those in previous solar minima. Besides the equinoctial asymmetry, nonseasonal and semiannual anomalies are present in daytime NmF2; the Weddell Sea anomaly appears in nighttime NmF2 in all seasons except the June solstice. Unusually higher values of h(m)F(2) and H-m appear at southern middle latitudes in the region centered at 70 degrees E in the daytime and h(m)F(2) at 70 degrees W in the nighttime. Wave-like longitudinal patterns are evidently present at low latitudes in all three parameters, showing diurnal and seasonal nature. The values of the parameters under study are smaller in 2008-2009 than the rest of the COSMIC period examined in this study. The seasonal and latitudinal pattern of daytime NmF2 on the solar sensitivity not only confirms our earlier investigation but also explains the observed small NmF2 in 2008-2009 in response to the reduced solar extreme ultraviolet radiance.

Equatorial North‐South Difference of Noontime Electron Density Bite‐Out in the F₂ Layer

Abstract Noontime bite‐out (depletion) of N m F 2 (peak electron density of the F 2 layer) often occurs in the equatorial ionosphere; it is characterized by a noontime minimum sandwiched by a prenoon peak and a postnoon peak of N m F 2 . The fountain effect was suggested to be responsible for this abnormal diurnal variation pattern. Noontime bite‐out should occur not only at the dip equator but also concurrently at both equatorial north and south according to the fountain effect mechanism. In this study, ionosonde measurements in the equatorial ionization anomaly trough region were selected to investigate the climatology of noontime bite‐out. North‐south difference of noontime bite‐out was presented for the first time. Noontime bite‐out occurs near the dip equator in all months. However, N m F 2 enhances continuously since early morning till late afternoon at equatorial north (south) in northern summer (winter) months; nevertheless, noontime bite‐out still occurs in other months. This cannot be understood only in terms of the fountain effect mechanism. We suggested the reason is seasonally dependent transequator plasma transport induced by neutral meridional winds. Transequator transport works since early morning to modulate N m F 2 variation pattern in daytime. Plasma outflow induced by the transequator transport results in significant N m F 2 depletion at equatorial north or south before the fountain effect induced bite‐out; thus, N m F 2 prenoon peak is restrained and noontime bite‐out variation pattern is absent.

Ionospheric Topside Diffusive Flux and the Formation of Summer Nighttime Ionospheric Electron Density Enhancement Over Millstone Hill

Abstract Ionospheric F‐region electron density is anomalously higher in the evening than during the daytime on many occasions in the summer in geomagnetic mid‐latitude regions. This unexpected ionospheric diurnal variation has been studied for several decades. The underlying processes have been suggested to be related to meridional winds, topside influx arising from sunset ionospheric collapse, and other factors. However, substantial controversies remain unresolved. Using a numerical model driven by the statistical topside O + diffusive flux from the Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar data, we provide new insight into the competing roles of topside diffusive flux, neutral winds, and electric fields in forming the evening density peak. Simulations indicate that while meridional winds, which turn equatorward before sunset, are essential to sustain the daytime ionization near dusk, the topside diffusive flux is critically important for the formation and timing of the summer evening density peak.

Transient Receptor Potential Channels and Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The transient receptor potential (TRP) cation channels are present in abundance across the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, serving as detectors for a variety of stimuli and secondary transducers for G-protein coupled receptors. The activation of TRP channels triggers neurogenic inflammation with related neuropeptides and initiates immune reactions by extra-neuronally regulating immune cells, contributing to the GI homeostasis. However, under pathological conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), TRP channels are involved in the intestinal inflammation. An increasing number of human and animal studies have indicated that TRP channels are correlated to the visceral hypersensitivity (VHS) and immune pathogenesis in IBD, leading to exacerbation or amelioration of the VHS or intestinal inflammation. Thus, TRP channels are a promising target for novel therapeutic methods for IBD. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the functions of TRP channels, especially their potential roles in immunity and IBD. Additionally, we discuss the contradictory findings of prior studies and offer new insights with regard to future research.

Overall Morphology of Prominent Zonal Differences in Low Latitude Ionosphere

Abstract This paper reports the overall morphology of prominent zonal differences in total electron content (TEC) data from Beidou geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites in the low latitude ionosphere over the Asia sector. Using GEO TEC observations from the GXZY receiver (26.2°N, 110.6°E) from 1 November 2019 to 30 November 2022, 64 prominent zonal difference events under geomagnetic quiet conditions were selected. We clarify the global longitude structures corresponding to these prominent zonal difference events at low latitudes through the global TEC products from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The structures that can cause the prominent zonal difference features in GEO TEC data are mainly divided into large‐scale wave‐like structures and featured regional structures. Among them, 19 cases of prominent zonal difference features were caused by large‐scale wave‐like structures, and 45 cases were caused by regional longitude structures. Prominent zonal differences generated from Large‐scale wave‐like structures are explained by the day‐to‐day variation of wave components, which creates an amplitude superposition and amplifies the crest intensity in a region. The featured regional structures cover a longitudinal range of about 10°–30°. In addition, we discussed the possible reasons for this small longitudinal structure by utilizing plasma drift velocity data at the magnetic equator from the Ionospheric Connection Explorer mission. The delicate longitude structures of vertical and zonal plasma drift likely contribute to the prominent zonal difference features in certain events.

The microbiota: a crucial mediator in gut homeostasis and colonization resistance

The gut microbiota is a complex and diverse community of microorganisms that colonizes the human gastrointestinal tract and influences various aspects of human health. These microbes are closely related to enteric infections. As a foreign entity for the host, commensal microbiota is restricted and regulated by the barrier and immune system in the gut and contributes to gut homeostasis. Commensals also effectively resist the colonization of pathogens and the overgrowth of indigenous pathobionts by utilizing a variety of mechanisms, while pathogens have developed strategies to subvert colonization resistance. Dysbiosis of the microbial community can lead to enteric infections. The microbiota acts as a pivotal mediator in establishing a harmonious mutualistic symbiosis with the host and shielding the host against pathogens. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms underlying host-microbiome and microbiome-pathogen interactions, highlighting the multi-faceted roles of the gut microbiota in preventing enteric infections. We also discuss the applications of manipulating the microbiota to treat infectious diseases in the gut.

Effects of disturbed electric fields in the low‐latitude and equatorial ionosphere during the 2015 St. Patrick's Day storm

Abstract The 2015 St. Patrick's Day geomagnetic storm with SYM‐H value of −233 nT is an extreme space weather event in the current 24th solar cycle. In this work, we investigated the main mechanisms of the profound ionospheric disturbances over equatorial and low latitudes in the Asian‐Australian sector and the American sector during this super storm event. The results reveal that the disturbed electric fields, which comprise penetration electric fields (PEFs) and disturbance dynamo electric fields (DDEFs), play a decisive role in the ionospheric storm effects in low latitude and equatorial regions. PEFs occur on 17 March in both the American sector and the Asian‐Australian sector. The effects of DDEFs are also remarkable in the two longitudinal sectors. Both the DDEFs and PEFs show the notable local time dependence, which causes the sector differences in the characteristics of the disturbed electric fields. This differences would further lead to the sector differences in the low‐latitude ionospheric response during this storm. The negative storm effects caused by the long‐duration DDEFs are intense over the Asian‐Australian sector, while the repeated elevations of h m F 2 and the equatorial ionization anomaly intensifications caused by the multiple strong PEFs are more distinctive over the American sector. Especially, the storm time F 3 layer features are caught on 17 March in the American equatorial region, proving the effects of the multiple strong eastward PEFs.
