Cluster Harvesting by Successive Reduction of a Metal Halide with a Nonconventional Reduction Agent: A Benefit for the Exploration of Metal-Rich Halide Systems

The preparation of thermally labile compounds is a great temptation in chemistry which requires a careful selection of reaction media and reaction conditions. With a new scanning technique denoted here as Cluster Harvesting, a whole series of metal halide compounds is detected by differential thermal analysis (DTA) in fused silica tubes and structurally characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Experiments of the reduction of tungsten hexahalides with elemental antimony and iron are presented. A cascade of six compounds is identified during the reduction with antimony, and five compounds or phases are monitored following the reduction with iron. The crystal structure of Fe2W2Cl10 is reported, and two other phases in the Fe-W-Cl system are discussed.

STEK: THE FAST-THERMAL COUPLED FACILITY OF RCN AT PETTEN. A Collection of Reports Describing the Status of the Facility, the Program, and the Experiments, as of February 1970.

This report is a collection of separate contributions on some aspects of the work done on STEK up to February 1970. A description is given of STEK together with the philosophy of its design, i.e. integral measurements of fission product cross sections by a sample oscillator technique in fast reactor spectra. The influences fission products may have on fast breeder reactors are briefly demonstrated by an example. A description of the facility and of the sample oscillator and sample exchange mechanism is given. Some preliminary results of measurements of reactor parameters and the neutron spectrum in the first fast zone in STEK are given. For the use of lead as material for the buffer an argumentation is given. The proposed program for the measurements of the integral fission product cross sections is outlined. The procurement of some, highly active, samples of actual fission products is briefly sketched. (auth)

Detection and Characterization of Compounds in the Mn‐W‐Cl System through a Combined Thermal Scanning ‐ XRD Approach

Abstract A procedure combining thermal analyses and XRD powder diffraction is used to scan and detect a series of new compounds in the Mn‐W‐Cl system. Four new ternary Mn‐W‐Cl compounds are formed in a progressive reaction of tungsten hexachloride (WCl 6 ) with manganese powder, in which tungsten is gradually reduced from W 6+ to W 2+ . Among several DSC signals, the new compounds Mn x WCl 6 , MnW 2 Cl 10 , (Mn, W) 1– x Cl 2 , and MnW 6 Cl 14 are detected and their crystal structures are assigned or identified by X‐ray diffraction techniques. Magnetic properties are reported for MnW 2 Cl 10 and MnW 6 Cl 14 .
