Vacuum polarization and the force between two excitons

A detailed investigation of what will happen when more than one exciton is present in the initial stage of a metal-insulator transition is presented. It is found that under some approximations a 'vacuum polarization' term causes the excitons to attract each other, which suggests a first order transition to a condensed phase of finite exciton density, which could be of molecular, metallic or van der Waal's type.

Nonlinear threshold electric transport has been studied at $T\ensuremath{\simeq}30$ mK near the collective insulating transition in a dilute two-dimensional (2D) electron system in high-mobility Si MOSFET's. We found that the threshold electric field becomes steplike at the critical density, both when $H=0$ and when $H\ensuremath{\ne}0$. This steplike onset indicates a weak first-order phase transition at the 2D electron-solid-to-liquid phase boundary.

Electron localization and delocalization in the one-dimensional Tomonaga model with backscattering and impurities

We extend our previous calculation of the effect of impurities on the one-dimensional electron gas in the Tomonaga model by including spin-flip backscattering in the electron-electron interaction. We find that this addition does not alter our conclusions concerning conductivity in this model.

Shear modulus of Laughlin-type wave functions

Using the excited states of Girvin, Macdonald, and Platzman and the fluid ground state proposed by Laughlin, the shear modulus is calculated as a strain autocorrelation function and is found to be finite (0.0056${e}^{2}$/${l}^{3}$).

Localization and delocalization in the one-dimensional Tomonaga model

To understand what happens in a one-dimensional system when both localization due to impurities and electron-electron interaction (${U}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$) are important, we studied the effect of impurities in the Tomonaga model by looking at the perturbation series for the conductivity in the impurity potential ${U}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$. By making an analogy to the two-dimensional Coulomb gas we were able to relate the static conductivity to the effective potential of two test charges infinitely far apart and understand the localization phenomena in terms of Debye screening. Furthermore we found that as the electron-electron interaction becomes attractive enough the electronic state becomes delocalized. This corresponds to a phase transition in the Coulomb gas when the positive and the negative charges are paired up and Debye screening disappears.

To study possible capacitive effects, we incorporate the effect of electron interaction on the ac spin-polarized tunnelling. Under steady-state nonequilibrium conditions, the voltage-induced charge accumulated at the interface is a sum of two terms, decaying with length scales of the order of the screening length and the spin diffusion length. As a result, the effective width of the capacitor is changed by an additional term. This additional term is a function of the magnetic configurations on opposite sides of the junction and a magnetocapacitance is introduced.
