Observation of 550 MHz passively harmonic mode-locked pulses at L-band in an Er-doped fiber laser using carbon nanotubes film

We demonstrate a passively harmonic mode-locked (PHML) fiber laser operating at the L-band using carbon nanotubes polyvinyl alcohol (CNTs-PVA) film. Under suitable pump power and an appropriate setting of the polarization controller (PC), the 54th harmonic pulses at the L-band are generated with the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) better than 44 dB and a repetition frequency of 503.37 MHz. Further increasing the pump power leads to a higher frequency of 550 MHz with compromised stability of 38.5 dB SMSR. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration on the generation of L-band PHML pulses from an Er-doped fiber laser based on CNTs.

Strong Anti-Stokes and Flat Supercontinuum in Specified Band Based on Non-Degenerate Raman Four-Wave Mixing Modulation

We proposed a method for flat supercontinuum (SC) in specified band based on non-degenerate Raman four-wave mixing (NRFWM) modulation. The dispersion of the photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and peak power of the pump light, are controlled such that the gain of the NRFWM falls in our desired band. This provides a new method for realizing SC with broadband hyperspectral intensities in the short-wavelength direction. By this method we developed a near-infrared flat SC. Its spectral intensity of 3 dB corresponds to a bandwidth of 420 nm at a central wavelength of 800 nm. In addition, the relative intensity of the anti-Stokes light is 75.2%, and 49.6% of the total spectral energy is concentrated in the 610–1030 nm band, which provides a more effective light source for optical coherence tomography (OCT). Using this SC as the light source of OCT can improve the axial resolution to 0.8 μm.

A wavelength-tunable Erbium-doped fiber laser with birefringence-enhanced cavity is proposed. A 45° tiled fiber grating (45°TFG) and a section of polarization maintaining (PM) fiber are placed between two two polarization controllers (PCs). Two PCs and PM fiber are employed to enhance the birefringence effect. The 45° TFG plays the role of an in-fiber polarizer. The fiber laser is mode-locked by single walled carbon nanotube polyvinyl alcohol (SWCNTs-PVA) composite film. Central wavelength of the fiber laser can be tuned from 1552.52nm to 1575.28nm with a tuning range of 22.76nm. The demonstrated laser provided the widest tuning range in a high repetition rate all-fiber Erbium doped laser based on SWCNT.

Influence of Average Cavity Dispersion and Spectral Bandwidth on Passively Harmonic Mode Locked L-Band Er-Doped Fiber Laser

We systematically study the impact of average cavity dispersion and pulse spectral bandwidth on harmonic mode locking in the long-wavelength band from an Er-doped fiber laser using carbon nanotubes polyvinyl alcohol (CNTs-PVA) film mode locker. By carrying out pulse energy management through optimizing the average cavity dispersion and optical spectral bandwidth, 2.08 GHz repetition rate corresponding to 201 ^st harmonic with 36.5 dB side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) can be realized under 205 mW pump power at 1597.53 nm. Furthermore, we systematically investigate the characteristics of the harmonically mode locked ultrashort optical pulses with different spectral bandwidths versus pump power under fixed cavity dispersion first. Key laser parameters have been studied including pumping efficiency, duration, energy, SMSR, and time bandwidth product. Enlightened by the experimental results, a simple law on preliminary and fast judgment of pulses frequency under fixed pump power is proposed, namely, by monitoring the pulse spectral bandwidth. The laser source featuring high repetition rate and L-band operation is greatly sought-after in some specific applications such as modern optical communication system etc.

Stable passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser incorporating a PbS quantum dots polystyrene composite film based saturable absorber

We demonstrated a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) using PbS quantum dots in polystyrene films (QDPFs) as saturable absorbers (SAs). Compared to other SAs, PbS QDPFs have advantages of broad absorption range, high quantum yield, low cost, and facile preparation. We have successfully generated stable Q-switched pulses with an average output power of 40.19 mW, a single pulse energy of 586.1 nJ, a repetition rate of 68.04 kHz, a pulse width of 3.9 μs, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 50.5 dB under 660 mW pump power. The output of the EDFL has been monitored for 5 consecutive hours under laboratory conditions to show stable operation of the laser system.

Design of Data Acquisition System for TOF Detectors in the CEE Experiment

The CSR External-target Experiment(CEE) system under development may reach an average data rate of 2 GB/s after being triggered. In response to the design requirements of the entire spectrometer, a generic stream processing data acquisition architecture D-Matrix is put forward in the article, and a specific scheme of D-Matrix in the Time-of-Flight detector(TOF) subsystem is proposed. The DAQ of the TOF system uses high-speed serial communication methods such as optical fiber and PCIe bus to complete data transmission from Front-End Electronics(FEE) to the servers, and deploys and cascades stream processing nodes with a unified interface to complete event building, command routing, Real-time status monitoring and displaying and data storage tasks. In addition, the DAQ of the TOF system has strong versatility in hardware and logic design, it also can be compatible with other sub-detector systems, and can be further applied to the global system of CEE experiments.

Electric field induced bandgap enlargement of S- and N-hyperdoped silicon

In this paper, the effect of the electric field on the electronic structure of S-hyperdoped silicon and N-hyperdoped silicon is studied in detail by theory. The results show that the total bandgap initially increases and subsequently decreases with the increase of the electric field. Specifically, at an electric field of 0.1 V, the total bandgap reaches the maximum. With further increasing the electric field, the total bandgap decreases, but it is still larger than that in the absence of any electric field. The bandgap difference of the configuration in 2 × 2 × 2 supercell with and without electric field is approximately 0.2 eV. When 0.1 V of the electric field in the x and y directions is applied to the 2 × 2 × 3 supercell of the S- and N-hyperdoped silicon, the changes of the electronic structure are consistent. However, the band gap expansion is more obvious than that in the z direction electric field. While for 3 × 3 × 2 supercells of the S- and N-hyperdoped silicon, the band gap expansion is more significant under the z direction electric field than that under electric fields in the x and y directions. The difference in the bandgap variation under different directions of the electric field should be due to the direction-dependence of the impurity density in the 2 × 2 × 3 and 3 × 3 × 2 supercells. The results indicate that applying an electric field can further enlarge the bandgap of the S- and N-hyperdoped silicon and bring it closer to the optimal bandgap of an intermediate-band photovoltaic material.
