Social Networks and Child Adjustment in Single-Parent Families.

This study examined the relationship of social network variables to child adjustment in one-parent families. The sample consisted of 119 six to ten year old eldest children wioce mothers were separated or divorced. Mothers provided ratings of the child on the Revised Behavior Problem Checklist, and information about the child's quality and frequency of contact with various members of his or her social network. A sUbsample of 94 of these children also rated themselves on the Child Depression Inventory. Multiple regression analyses revealed that only the network quality measures were significant predictors of child adjustment. Sex differences were also noted, with boys' interactions with peers and the custodial mother more salient, while interactions with the non-custodial father and other adults were more salient for girls.

Depression and social contacts of children from one-parent families

Depressive symptoms and social contacts of 76 children living in one-parent families were assessed through child and parent report measures. In each case, the child was the eldest or only child and was between 6 and 10 years old. The child's relations with peers, siblings, the noncustodial father, the custodial mother, and other adults were examined. Analyses revealed that the overall quality of the child's social contacts was a better predictor of depressive symptoms than was frequency of contact. In general, the quality of relationships with other adults was the best single predictor of symptoms. However, for the subgroup of families in which there were siblings present, quality of the child's relationship with siblings was a marginally significant predictor. Results suggest the importance of nonparental relationships in moderating the child's self-reported depressive symptoms.

Depression in Children from Single-Parent Families

The study examined depression in 53 eldest children between six and ten years old who were living in mother-headed one-parent families. None of the children were involved in counseling or psychological treatment at the time of the study. Child report scores on the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) were regressed on three variables, gender of the children, a self-report measure of the mother's depression, and the amount of time since the parents' separation. Analyses revealed that only gender of the child was a significant predictor of CDI scores, with boys reporting significantly greater depressive symptomatology. Contrary to expectation, neither time since separation nor depression in the mother added significantly to the prediction. Mother's ratings of the child on DSM-III criteria for depression were also regressed on the same three factors, revealing that only the mother's depression score was a significant predictor of her perceptions of the child's depressive symptoms. Results are discussed in terms of current models of the psychological effects of divorce on children.
