CrAlGe: An itinerant ferromagnet with strong tunability by heat treatment

We present a comprehensive investigation on CrAlGe and realize that it is an itinerant ferromagnet with strong tunability of the Curie temperature T C and the spontaneous moment μ 0 depending on annealing heat treatment. While the value of T C was previously reported to be 80 K with μ 0 ≈ 0.41 μ B , in this work the two quantities attain values as high as 170 K and 0.66 μ B , respectively. Heat treatment does not cause changes of the lattice parameters and symmetry, but results in a slight narrowing of the Bragg peaks. The strong tunability of the itinerant ferromagnetism indicates significantly tunable hybridization between the Cr 3d electrons and the conduction bands, in agreement with the dominant Cr–Al/Ge bonds of this compound. Further tuning along the same line towards even stronger or weaker itinerant ferromagnetism promises an interesting follow-up to clarify the localized-itinerant duality of the 3d electrons in this compound.

Evidence of a Kondo Destroying Quantum Critical Point in YbRh₂Si₂

The heavy-fermion metal YbRh2Si2 is a weak antiferromagnet below TN = 0.07 K. Application of a low magnetic field Bc = 0.06 T (⊥c) is sufficient to continuously suppress the antiferromagnetic (AF) order. Below T ≈ 10 K, the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat γ(T) exhibits a logarithmic divergence. At T < 0.3 K, γ(T) ∼ T−ε (ε: 0.3–0.4), while the electrical resistivity ρ(T) = ρ0 + aT (ρ0: residual resistivity). Upon extrapolating finite-T data of transport and thermodynamic quantities to T = 0, one observes (i) a vanishing of the “Fermi surface crossover” scale $T^{*}$(B), (ii) an abrupt jump of the initial Hall coefficient RH(B) and (iii) a violation of the Wiedemann Franz law at B = Bc, the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP). These observations are interpreted as evidence of a critical destruction of the heavy quasiparticles, i.e., propagating Kondo singlets, at the QCP of this material.

CeCu₂Si₂ and YbRh₂Si₂: Strange Cases of Heavy-Fermion Superconductivity

The heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ exhibits two-band, $d$-wave superconductivity with a finite energy gap over the whole Fermi surface around the magnetic instability where 4$f$ antiferrerromagnetic order is suppressed. In contrast, in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ heavy-fermion superconductivity appears only when 4$f$-electronic antiferromagnetic order is replaced at ultra-low temperatures by a combined nuclear and 4$f$-spin order. Whereas both compounds exhibit different variants of antiferromagnetic instabilities, i.e., a spin-density-wave quantum critical point in CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and one of "partial-Mott" type in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, in both cases the Cooper pairing, as well as the pronounced "strange-metal" behavior in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, appear to be driven by large-to-small Fermi surface fluctuations. The transport properties and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) for these materials are dominated by single-ion Kondo scatterings down to very low temperatures. Further open problems of the Kondo lattice include both the interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order as well as the onset of lattice coherence. While microscopic coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism seems to require a sufficiently large staggered moment, the onset of lattice coherence in transport measurements and STS is associated solely with the crystal-field-doublet ground state, while it involves the fully degenerate Hund's rule multiplet in ARPES.

Strange Elastic Properties and Possible Octupolar Ordering in SmRu₄P₁₂

We have reported curious behavior found in the elastic constant associated with the Metal–Insulator (M–I) transition and the successive phase transition in SmRu 4 P 12 . To explain characteristic properties of SmRu 4 P 12 , we focus our attention on two features; (1) an elastic softening appears below M–I transition and (2) the phase boundary between phases II and III is indistinct. Symmetry consideration and a phenomenological theory base on it show that particular couplings among the dipole as the order parameter for phase III, the octupole moment as that for phase II and the elastic strain, a part of which is allowed only in T h symmetry, are responsible for strange phenomena in SmRu 4 P 12 .
