Effect of charge balancing cations on the viscoelastic and thermal properties of welan

Welan is a branched polymer in the gellan family of polysaccharides. It has good compatibility with divalent calcium ions with a potential use in cementing applications. It is also been utilized as an anti-washout material for underwater concrete placement. Herein, influence of divalent cations Ca2+, Ni2+, Mg2+, Zn2+ and Sr2+ on the gelling and thermal properties of welan have been investigated. The viscoelastic properties reveal strong gelation behavior that are stable up to 80 °C. Among all the five cations Ni2+, Ca2+, Zn2+ and Sr2+ are suited well, compared to Mg2+ ions, to promote favorable interactions among the welan chains leading to stronger junction zones and elastic moduli. The melting peak and enthalpy are dependent on the nature and size of the divalent cation. The outcome is deemed to aid to expand the welan utility in food and non-food applications.

Rational Design of Lamellar π–π Stacked Organic Crystalline Materials with Short Interplanar Distance

Organic crystalline materials having a lamellar π–π stacked structural motif with short interplanar distance are significant for many applications. By asymmetrically introducing perfluoroalkyl substituents onto and polarizable sulfur atoms into N-containing heteroaromatics, we successfully synthesized a novel type of aromatic material that preferentially forms lamellar π–π stacked crystalline materials with a interplanar π–π distance of 3.247 Å, more than 0.1 Å shorter than that of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) where interplanar distance ranges from 3.35 to 3.39 Å.

Chalcogen Bridged Thieno- and Selenopheno[2,3-d:5,4-d′]bisthiazole and Their Diketopyrrolopyrrole Based Low-Bandgap Copolymers

We report the synthesis and characterization of four novel small bandgap copolymers incorporating the electron-deficient thieno[2,3-d:5,4-d′]bisthiazole and selenopheno[2,3-d:5,4-d′]bisthiazole building blocks with a series of electron-deficient diketopyrrolopyrole units. The four resultant copolymers were synthesized via palladium Stille cross-coupling reaction, and their optical, thermal stability, electrochemical, and field-effect charge transport properties were investigated. All copolymers showed low optical bandgaps (1.53–1.56 eV); in addition, X-ray diffraction on solution-cast films revealed that the selenium-containing copolymers exhibit higher crystallinity compared to their thiophene counterparts.
