Preparation and electrochemical performance of nanowire-shaped Na₃Mn_2−xFe_x(P₂O₇)(PO₄) for sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries

A series of Fe-doped Na3Mn2-xFex(P2O7)(PO4) (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4) (abbreviated as NMFP-0/NMFP-0.2/NMFP-0.4) compounds have been successfully prepared using the sol-gel method. The Rietveld refinement results indicate that single-phase Na3Mn2-xFex(P2O7)(PO4) with an orthorhombic structure can be obtained. Our results reveal that by controlling the raw materials, the molar ratio of the reactants, the stirring rate of the precursor, the annealing temperature rate, and the reaction time, the proportion of nanowires in the morphology increases as the Fe component rises, and the NMFP-0.4 nanowire-shaped compounds show the best electrochemical activity when used as a cathode material for SIBs. Additionally, its specific capacity is enhanced to ∼126 mA h g-1 in the first cycle when operated at 0.1 C and a working potential window of 1.8-4.3 V (vs. Na/Na+). The material can also be applied in lithium-ion batteries as an anode and achieves ∼600 mA h g-1 specific capacity at a current density of 0.1 C (1 C = 1000 mA g-1) in a working potential window of 0.01-3 V (vs. Li/Li+).

Mueller matrix retinal imager with optimized polarization conditions

A new Mueller matrix polarimeter was used to image the retinas of normal subjects. Light from a linearly polarized 780 nm laser was passed through a system of variable retarders and scanned across the retina. Light returned from the eye passed through a second system of retarders and a polarizing beamsplitter to two confocal detection channels. Optimization of the polarimetric data reduction matrix was via a condition number metric. The accuracy and repeatability of polarization parameter measurements were within +/- 5%. The magnitudes and orientations of retardance and diattenuation, plus depolarization, were measured over 15 degrees of retina for 15 normal eyes.

An In-Situ Structural Self-Optimization Strategy Toward Ca1- X V3o7 Cathode for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries with Ultra-High Capacity and Lifespan

Exploring excellent electrode material with high structural stability and rapid ions dynamics is the key challenge for achieving high capacity and long-term cycling stability aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Herein, we design a layered Ca1-xV3O7 cathode via an electrochemical in-situ structural self-optimization method. Removing a large amount of calcium ions from the parent phase structure not only provides effective space for the storage of zinc ions, but also significantly improves the ions transfer dynamics. At the same time, the residual Ca ions acts as ‘pillar’ to stabilize the layered structure and effectively avoid the structural collapse phenomenon of the layered vanadium oxide cathode during cycling. As a result, the self-optimized Ca1-xV3O7 (x = 0.84) cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 512 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and impressing long lifespan in different current density condition. Furtherly, with the aid of the in-situ characterization technology, the reversible zinc ions storage mechanism of the Ca1-xV3O7 is revealed in detail. More importantly, by adjusting the x value of Ca1-xV3O7, we provide a new microcosmic perspective on the Ca2+- Zn2+ buffering mechanism in the host of Ca1-xV3O7 by DFT calculations and experimental evidence, which provides a guideline for rational design of the high-performance layered vanadium oxide cathodes for ZIBs.

Imaging polarimetry of macular disease

Polarization properties of the human eye have long been used to study the tissues of the human retina, as well as to improve retinal imaging, and several new technologies using polarized light are in use or under development.^1-8 The most typical polarimetry technique in ophthalmology clinic is a scanning laser polarimetry for the glaucoma diagnosis.^1,2 In the original conceptualization, the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer is estimated using the birefringent component of light returning from the ocular fundus. More recently, customized software to analyze data from scanning laser polarimetry was developed to investigate the polarization properties of the macular disease.^5-8 In this study, we analyzed macular disease with imaging polarimetry, which provides a method for the noninvasive assessment of macular disease.
